Dental Exams in Peoria, AZ

Preventive Care

Preventive care is the cornerstone of good oral health. At the Pleasant Pediatric Dentistry, we use routine dental cleanings as an opportunity to educate our young patients on proper hygiene techniques. We also give parents tips on helping their children build a lifetime of healthy oral habits.

During your child's dental cleaning, our hygienist will clean and polish your child's teeth and our dentist will perform a complete examination. Should your child require additional restorative services, our dentist will explain the necessary treatments and answer any questions you may have.

Routine Dental Cleaning

It is suggested that children should be seen for a dental cleaning and routine exam every 6 months or as recommended by Dr. Whelan. During the cleaning, plaque and calculus will be removed from the teeth leaving behind a bright and polished smile.

Occasionally, diagnostic radiographs (x-rays) need to be taken to help detect possible cavities in between teeth that cannot be seen by the naked eye. In addition, we will educate you and your child on how to maintain their smile in between visits.

Digital X-rays

X-rays are one of the most valuable tools a dentist has for diagnosing problems in the teeth and jaws. Not all issues can be detected by a visual examination alone. Especially in children, X-rays are used to monitor tooth growth and development as well as decay - helping us to keep their mouth and teeth healthy all along the way.

Digital radiographs are one of the newest x-ray techniques around and will become the standard for the future!

Our office is proud to provide this technology to our patients. Instead of using a traditional dark room, the images are sent electronically to a computer where it can then be easily viewed, stored, sent or printed. This technology and software produces much higher quality images, 90% less radiation and can be more comfortable for the patient than traditional films.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a great agent used to help prevent tooth decay. It is naturally present in different amounts in almost all foods and water supplies. Benefits of using fluoride have been well known for over 50 years and are supported by many health and professional organizations.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are an important preventive measure that helps prevent decay on a child's permanent molars. Dr. Whelan recommends that sealants be placed to help preserve your child's teeth, and would be happy to discuss the benefits of sealants at your child's next appointment!

Tooth-Colored Fillings

In the past few years, silver restorations have been replaced with tooth colored fillings, resulting in a smile which looks completely natural. These restorations are a lot less noticeable than other types of fillings, allowing your child to smile with confidence.

Extractions

At Pleasant Pediatric Dentistry, extractions are performed when removing a tooth is the best option for restoring the health of the patient's mouth. Dr. Whelan may recommend an extraction when a tooth is:

  • Infected by periodontal (gum) disease
  • Significantly damaged or decayed
  • Impacted (stuck) in the mouth
  • Complications from trauma
  • Delayed exfoliation
  • Orthodontic request

Dr. Whelan will do everything in his power to ensure that your child is comfortable during the treatment. Remember to make sure your child follows his instructions after the extraction.

Crowns

Crowns are necessary when a tooth is severely damaged or has suffered from advanced decay and cannot be fixed with bonded filling material. Crowns cover the remaining tooth and restore its function, strength, and esthetics. Several crown material options are available including non-metal crowns. Dr. Whelan will discuss these on an individual basis depending on the area of the mouth that needs to be restored.

Biolase® Waterlase

Our office is proud to provide laser dentistry! In the hands of our trained dentist, the Biolase® Waterlase is a safe medical device that has many advantages for our patients.

Waterlase is a safe and gentle alternative to traditional dental instruments. Using the laser and water spray, Waterlase can perform many procedures without a shot or a drill. Heat, vibration, and pressure are the primary causes of pain associated with the use of traditional dental drills.

Cutting both hard and soft tissue (teeth and gums) with the Waterlase does not generate heat, vibration, or pressure. Many dental procedures can be performed nearly pain-free with fewer shots, less need for anesthesia, less use of the drill and fewer numb lips. Using the Waterlase for gum procedures greatly reduces bleeding, post-operative pain, swelling and the need for pain medication in many cases.

Dr. Whelan also uses the laser for tongue and lip frenectomy procedures to correct ankyloglossia and assist with breast feeding. Ask us for more information and if Waterlase dentistry is an option for your child's next treatment!

Restorative Care

In the event your child requires additional dental care, Dr. Whelan will review the prescribed treatment following your child's examination, answer your questions and have our friendly staff schedule the next appointment. The staff at Pleasant Pediatric Dentistry will do their best to preserve your child's primary teeth until they are lost naturally, by utilizing modern, dental techniques.

When extensive treatment is necessary or special care considerations exist, Dr. Whelan may recommend dental treatment under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure in a hospital or surgery center. This is a safe and effective treatment option that can be discussed at your child's appointment.

IV Sedation Dentistry

IV (intravenous) sedation dentistry is commonly used for cases when a child has extensive dental needs but is unable to sit for multiple appointments or if a child has intellectual, behavioral or physical disabilities that make it difficult for them to receive dental treatment in the usual manner. We utilize a Board Certified Dental Anesthesiologist who administers the medication and monitors the child while Dr. Whelan performs the dental treatment. The child is unconscious, receives all treatment needed and has no memory of it when it is finished.

Special Needs Dental Care

Dr. Whelan at Pleasant Pediatric Dentistry is trained and experienced in providing dental care to young patients who have special needs. Since pediatric dentists require 2 more years of training beyond dental school, Dr. Whelan received specific training on how to properly care for patients with special needs; so you can be sure your child is in capable and caring hands. Our Policies

Dental Policies in Peoria, AZ

Financial

Your treatment plan will include a breakdown of all applicable fees, and we will inform you of all your costs before treatment. However, this is only an estimate due to the fact that insurance companies can change the coverage benefits at any time. Your portion of the fee (if any) is expected at the time treatment is rendered, unless special arrangements have been made prior to your appointment.

We offer a variety of payment options to meet your needs. Our office accepts payments by cash, checks, and credit cards. We also offer financing options through CareCredit - who offer 3, 6, 12, or 18 month "same as cash" financing. If you have any questions about financing or payment, as us! We will thoroughly explain your choices and work hard to accommodate your needs.

Dental Appointments in Peoria, AZ

Appointments

We request 24-hours notice if you need to cancel your appointment. We are aware that unforeseen events sometimes require missing an appointment, and we appreciate your cooperation.

We try our best to accommodate our patients as much as possible when scheduling appointments. Some appointments may require the child to miss some school. We do attempt to work with neighboring school's schedules to keep appointments requiring missed school to a minimum. We have found that children with extensive dental work or preschool age children are better seen early in the morning when they are fresher and can have a more positive experience.

Insurance

We bill your insurance as a courtesy. We participate with many insurance carriers and are continually adding new ones. If your employer's insurance covers treatment, you will receive the benefits at a reduced cost. Policies vary, so we will review your employer's insurance plan with you to determine the appropriate course of action. To help us with your insurance filing, please complete the insurance questions on our patient form. Please remember that your employer's dental insurance is a benefit for your child. If, during the course of treatment your benefits change, the financially responsible party is accountable for all charges.
